An extensive study from 2012 found that pain and obesity have a strong connection – and the link seems to remain regardless of other aspects of an individual’s health.
Part of the reason there is a higher level of pain reported by those who are overweight is that they more commonly experience health conditions that give rise to pain, including back pain, type 2 diabetes, fibromyalgia, depression, and arthritis. While those pain-producing health issues do play a major factor, the connection between pain and obesity still exists beyond their impact, the researchers determined.
The research was backed up by a 2017 study that found a lower pain threshold in obese patients.
Since chronic pain is so commonly associated with weight, it helps to know which forms of low-impact exercise are most effective at achieving the goal of losing weight. Here are a few exercises that are low-impact but still burn a large volume of calories:
Walking
Walking incorporates the work of just about every one of your body’s muscles. Work yourself up to 45 minutes. You can start at 10 minutes and increase the time by 10% weekly. When you are ready for greater intensity, you can walk faster and slower during alternating stretches.
Cycling
You can get a great workout without placing stress on your joints with cycling, whether you do it outside or inside. It is of some interest that you will get more out of your workout if it is performed outside, according to one study. The research team found that cyclists exerted 25% more power when they were outside even though they felt that they were exerting at the same level.
Step Climbing
Climbing stairs, whether on a machine at the gym or using real stairs, will help you lose weight without much impact. The climbing makes the workout burn more calories and is also better for cardiovascular health. However, stop if you feel fatigued or that you are losing your balance.
Power Yoga
With power yoga, you hold poses for a few breaths, then move into the next one. It is necessary to engage the majority of your muscles. Since that is the case, you maintain a high heart rate and keep burning calories.
